Column # 24 - Cowboy Boots

Cowboy Boots
By Amy Witt

They are a must have!  From wins to loses, love, fun, and even heartbreaks, they are with us every step of the way. They can make us feel  on top of the world and frankly we cannot function without them.  It's fun to try to figure out why some fads shoot for the moon and others fall down in the gutter. With some, there is no rhyme or reason for their sudden burst, and they usually fade as fast as they appear. But I must say, cowboy boots will never be a fad.
Legend has it that cowboy boots can be traced back to Genghis Khan, who was the emperor of the Mongol Empire, who wore distinctive red boots with wooden heels. England, 17th and 18th century, displayed riding boots with high tops and stacked heels. Then there was the first Duke of Wellington, who defeated Napoleon at Waterloo in 1815, wearing calf-length boots with a low heel, Arthur Wellesley. The Wellington's made it easy to mass produce in the 1860's. Wellington boots were preferred by soldiers during the U.S. Civil War, and when the war ended in 1865, soldiers proudly took their boots home. America later ushered in the era of the cowboy and the cowboy boots have made their statement we love and know today.
Cowboy boots have made a huge impact making appearances with high fashion designers. From Michael Kors to Isabel Marant models stroll down the runway dressed impeccably from head to toe wearing a history ensemble. Early cowboy boots were work boots and were suitably utilitarian in appearance. With actors such as John Wayne, Gene Autry, and Roy Rogers, Hollywood made heroes and fashion icons out of cowboys, while making fashion statements out of cowboy boots.  Then, here comes the Hollywood filmmakers who adopted the era of the cowboy. Rugged individualism, strength, independence heroes-they popularized cowboys…come on, everyone knows who John Wayne is! Roy Rogers was always best dressed wearing  handsome hand tooled boots with star designs, embossing and inlays that added to the beauty and mystique.
This year, we will see an abundance of cowboy boots decorated with bright colors, prints, and height. From Tin Haul, to Lucchese, each company is competing with one another making their own fashion statement among our huge boot industry.
My boot collection, "to diiiieee for ddaaahllliinngg!" My collection goes on for years. I completely refuse to purchase from retailers unless I absolutely have to. Over the years, I began collecting from thrift and vintage stores. I have come to appreciate a pair of cowboy boots better that way.  With this comes the broadening of my knowledge of brands, history, and taste for cowboy boots. You cannot believe the boots and brands I have found not only with the quality but the price tag which makes it that much better! I love my old cowboy boots because I know that I continue to walk in a story someone else has started. For me, cowboy boots are romantic and are part of our American vision. They make me feel taller, stronger, louder, and confident. In cowboy boots, you strut your swagger. There is no vulnerability allowed!

Hello and Happy Friday!

Column #23- Inspire Me.

The Porterville Recorder
Inspire Me

By Amy Witt

Some days I wake up and don’t want to get out of bed…do you ever feel like that? Do you ever feel like at times you have no motivation, no inspiration…like something or some one just needs to kick you and wake you up! I have my days. Days of horrible attitudes, bad hair days, feeling like I can’t put together an outfit, or not knowing where to begin putting these fingers on this keyboard. As a writer, designer, blogger, artist, and student, I must always be inspired. For me, I yearn to inspire others and make others feel good. Some days I can just look at a picture or meet someone new and boom instantly I feel that fire burning inside me.
Many times I have been asked the same question over and over, “What inspires you?” My answer…everyone and everything! Inspiration for me is everything…anything- whether it’s people, art, quotes, spiritually, mentally, dreams, books, music, designers…must I go on? I have trained myself to be open to any ideas and thoughts and live in the moment.
There have been many people that have walked into my life and continuously remind me of that inspiration burning inside me. When you feel inspired you’ll take action and taking action is the key to achieving what you want, whether it’s increasing your business, making changes in your life, feeling better about yourself, or progressing towards your dreams. I dream big, really big! At times, I feel my dreams seem irrational but then again how could they be if they are my dreams? I recently learned that inspiration was right in front of my face; my family, best friends, nature, new people I’ve recently met. I also decided that I must surround myself with positivity and inspiration will allow me to maintain mental, physical, and emotional health. An inspiration board-it did it all. Decorating my room with affirmations, goals, dreams, pictures, and even materialistic items have been giving me that inspiration and desire to wake up every morning happy, inspired, and open to new ideas, thoughts, and people.
Inspire me! I would love to know what or who inspires you? Please email me at amycwitt@gmail.com. My favorite will receive a painting from me! I will also feature you in my column and blog! “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
Have a great Thursday!

Column # 22 - Texas Odyssey

A Texas Odyssey
By Amy Witt

As you all know, I was in Stephenville, Texas for three weeks for a designing adventure…on a trip which felt like a year. All I know is I am so happy to be back home to beautiful Porterville. Leaving the state always makes me appreciate California and Porterville all that much more. Texas is a great, beautiful, state but I don’t know if I could ever call it home.
My days were long and weeks were even longer. Our design team started with a bang having group meetings, learning new programs, designing, getting inspired, and attempting to get in contact with Mark, the vice president of the company that will be launching Cowboy Fresh. We needed to get in contact with Mark, because without Mark, we were a little lost on how many designs to execute.  After doing the same things over and over again everyday it was starting to feel like nothing was coming about. The team decided to take me for a spin around Stephenville and the surrounding areas.
First up, Fuzzy’s, a taco restaurant that sold $5.00 “beeritas,”frozen margaritas from a slurpee machine, in a glass that was so big  you couldn’t hold it with one hand, and the people drinking margaritas applauded as the sunset faded away-the mind immediately turns toward the happy go-lucky ways of Texans. I don’t know if they drink too many beeritas in this town or what!
The team decided to take me fishing for a few days in a row…bore me. My dad can take me fishing anytime, any day, anywhere around here and actually catch fish without karate chopping at the air. Mosquitos…must I say more? I was so destroyed by mosquitos not only did I have to cover them with makeup because I was so embarrassed by the bites and them bleeding, but I woke up one morning not only with mosquito bites on my eye but with my throat practically swollen shut and a cough I could not get rid of.  Am I a drama queen? I think NOT! I forgot to tell you I am a very picky fisherwoman…I do not put the bait on the hook nor take my fish off the hook when I catch it…that's what my dad's there for. He allowed me to get away with it so I expect to get away with it with whomever I am with. Also, I do not catch my bait…but I was proud of myself when I accomplished catching my little frogs for the bait to catch bass…but in my case I caught a blue gill that probably weighed one ounce. All in all, I enjoyed my fishing experience with my team, enjoyed the beautiful nature of Texas, and got to soak up a few rays!
Texas was a great experience and I am so grateful to have the opportunities I have. May 11th, Cowboy Fresh has a meeting with the infamous Mark to get things rolling and to schedule a launch date. Being back home to the daily grind, makes life so much better!

A lil Instagram action for ya! @caliiforniadreamin
